September 16th is a special day for me. Besides being my birthday, it’s Mexico’s Independence Day.
Yesterday, September 15th, marks the independence of:
- Costa Rica,
- El Salvador,
- Guatemala,
- Honduras, and
- Nicaragua.
Each one of these Central American country’s broke free from Spain on the same day in 1821.
Chile’s Independence Day is Sept. 18th, while Brazil’s is Sept. 7th.

woohooo, chile made the list. It’s not exactly independence day, more the celebration of the first congressional meeting or something, but it’s darn festive, and somewhat soaked in alchohol, as I wrote here: http://matadornights.com/chile-gears-up-for-its-alcohol-infused-national-holiday.
The festivities are practically underway already, and from here on out it’s all cuecas and chicha. I wonder what everyone else was up to yesterday and on their respective days!
