I think that's a great dream! It's one that I'm fascinated with too. There was an article in the Washington Post last weekend (I think) about a man who rode his motorcycle to Wash DC from Brazil. I bet that in about 50 years the whole continent will be connected by a huge super-highway. We need to make the trip before it becomes too easy. As far as getting killed goes, I think it's pretty unlikely. I interviewed someone earlier this year who rode his bike from Alaska to Argentina. He said what surprised him the most was how great everyone treated him--especially some of the really poor people.

It is great to see them getting more interested in Central America, I have been very interested in Latin Cultures and my biggest dream and goal is to drive through Mexico, Central and South America.
I think most Americans now feel that it is now safe enough to travel south of the boarder but still questionable enough to make it an exciting journey.
You ought to hear all of the responses I get when sharing my dream of traveling through all of these great countries, more than any other I get "Your going to get killed!!" its just funny to me
