My 3 Best Kept Travel Secrets

My friend Sonya who writes the blog traveling greener nominated me to share three of my best travel secrets on Travelojos.

Sonya’s nomination is part of the Travel Base blog’s Trip Base Blog Tag, in which “the final list of Top Bloggers’ Best Kept Travel Secrets will be published in a special blog post and shared across the Net.”

I like this travel blog carnival’s focus on the obscure. The idea is to share the destinations, hotels, or restaurants that don’t receive the attention they deserve.

1. Guadalajara, Mexico.

Guadalajara's Centro Historico

Guadalajara's Centro Historico

If you’re looking for a taste of city life and culture in Mexico but haven’t worked up the nerve to visit Mexico City yet, Guadalajara might just be the place you’re looking for.

Despite being Mexico’s second largest city with a population of about 5 million ( compared with Mexico City’s 21 million), most guidebooks devote little attention to it.

Like most under-appreciated destinations, Guadalajara’s pleasures come cheap.

2. Gaby’s Restaurant–Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

As the only diners on the roof top terrace of the small hill-top restaurant in Mexico, my family almost had the place to ourselves. The sole exception was the Mexican couple who owned the place and lived there. But after the co-owner’s second or third trip up the steep stairway from the kitchen to attend to us, I began to feel like she was a Mexican aunt I never knew about.

After we finished our meal and listened to our son and daughter’s banter, the woman gave us a tour of her kitchen and showed us some black and white pictures of what the town looked like in the 1960s. The $35 tab for our meal and drinks seemed like it was from the 1960s too.

Gaby_02923. Didi’s Bed & Breakfast– Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

The average price for a room at a top hotel in Manuel Antonio is nearly $300 per night. But my wife and I paid about $65 per night at Didi’s. We enjoyed great personal service, and good food too.

Oh how I do hate typos, that should be “carnival” and “secrets”, my apologies, never post while talking to your four year old!
