On Monday, I mentioned that Google Maps was available in Mexico, but I couldn’t find Google Street View. I should have consulted the Google Maps Mania blog. It has some navigable Street Views of Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.
Street View is a feature on Google Maps in which you drag a little man icon to a place on a map. Once there, your screen will spit and you can navigate through a series of pictures of a location. These pictures make up a virtual world that you can tour via your computer.
Besides the “wow factor” of Street View, Google Maps offers several other practical features for researching trips to Mexico. Want to find all the museums in Mexico City? Search “museo” and every museum will pop up on the map. On the left margin will be a description of each museum along with the address.
Restaurants. Looking for a restaurant in Polanco? Search “restaurant” and “Polanco” on the map.
You can also save certain maps in “my maps.” This feature allows you to share maps with others. Among other things, doing this allows you to plot out a meeting place and provide directions from several different starting points.
With all the information Google Maps has to offer via most cell phones, it looks like guide books will be going the way of the Dodo Bird.
Video. This Google video provides a thorough demonstration of Street View’s capabilities. (The beginning is a bit long, but it’s worth it.)
