Mexico Says Adios to 2009, Hola Bicentennial

The passing of 2009 marks the end of what Queen Elizabeth II would describe as Annus Horribilis for Mexico.

Queen Elizabeth coined the term in 1992 to describe a year in which much of the royal family plagued by scandalous marital woes and the Windsor Castle caught fire.

By comparison, the problems Mexico endured last year make the Queen’s hardships seem like minor inconveniences. A drug-cartel crisis that caused thousands of deaths and hysteria over a flu epidemic all but knocked out Mexico’s tourism trade.

Hopefully 2010 will be as good a year as it is an auspicious one for Mexico.  September 15 will mark Mexico’s 200th year of independence from Spain. November 20 will mark 100 years since the revolution.

For the full details on how Mexico plans to celebrate these occasions, check out this entry in Wikipedia.

Happy Bicentennary to Mexico! I remember when Australia had our Bicentennary back in 1988. The main thing I remember about it is a) the tall ships re-enacting the arrival of the First Fleet of convicts in 1788 and b) the controversy because of this also being 200 years of occupation for the indigenous population. The slogan was “40,000 years is not a bicentennary”. However, in terms of independent nation states Mexico is actually an older country than Australia. Australia won’t be celebrating 200 years as an independent nation until 2101.
