More Planning Tips for Latin America

There were some helpful comments to my “checklist” blog post yesterday.
I recommended taking an antibiotic such as Cipro on your trip. But travel writer Nicholas Gill said it’s a good idea to:
Buy Cipro in Latin America. They have some form of it at every pharmacy and for much cheaper than in the States.
To guard against [...]

Unloved on Valentines Day? Try Latin America

By Jennifer Lubrani
“Mas enamorado que el cabro cupido”  (A saying from Puerto Rico that means to be more in love than a goat shot by Cupid’s arrow or to be head over heels in love).
Latin American countries are increasingly adopting the U.S. version of Valentines Day.
But some important differences remain. Most notably, Latin Americans tend [...]

Seven Travelojos Blogolutions for 2010

Practically every year going back to high school I’ve resolved to do something that involves waking up at five in the morning. I would devote this golden hour to whatever I was feeling passionate about at that phase of my life.
These passions have ranged from practicing basketball, to running, or learning Spanish. Last year, [...]

Travelojos Reader Survey Results

Last week I asked Travelojos readers to take a short survey about how they feel about the content and design of the blog. Here is what they told me:

The topic they’d most like to see posts about is travel experiences, followed by current events in Latin America. Travel philosophy was a close third.
The thing [...]

A Look Back at the First Year of Travelojos

Yesterday, I asked you to fill out a quick survey and revealed some key statistics about Travelojos. But the numbers don’t tell the whole story.
Better indicators are the content and people behind the results.
The year began with an interview with Julie Schwietert Collazo, managing editor of the Matador Network, about her visit to Guatanamo [...]

It’s nearly the end of 2009 and the decade. Prime time for some serious navel gazing.
While I have a spotty record of making good on New Year’s resolutions, one promise I did make good on was sticking with Travelojos in [...]

Some Negative Thoughts About Latin America

“If you don’t have anything nice to say, sit next to me,” the saying goes. After spending a year in bloglandia, I’ve noticed that some travel bloggers adopt a tirelessly positive tone when writing about the destinations they cover.
They relentlessly churn out lists of things such as “the 10 Friendliest Countries in the World,” [...]

Tips for Driving in Mexico

“Drive in Mexico? Isn’t that incredibly dangerous?”
Not according to a travel writer who did it and spoke with several other Americans who drove throughout the country and experienced few problems.
The writer, Peter Ferry, starts off his story in the Chicago Tribune by noting that it would be impossible to get auto insurance in Mexico [...]

Even Lou Dobbs Is Changing His Tune on Immigration

One of the topics I’ve written about over the past year is the growing influence of the Latin American community within the U.S. There are about 45 million people of Hispanic origin in the country, and that number is expected to grow considerably over the coming years.
This influx of Latin Americans into the U.S. has [...]

2009 Murder Statistics: U.S. Visitors to Latin America

Out of the approximately 2.5 million U.S. visitors to Mexico in the first half of 2009, at least 126 Americans died of non-natural causes, according to U.S. State Department statistics.
The Los Angeles Times points out that, of these, there were:

36 homicides, and
22 drownings.

The balance of the non-natural deaths resulted from accidents and suicides.
Wend Magazine [...]
